Ali Mohamed, 31, joined the Iraqi police in 2005 and was in training, but not yet assigned to a unit, when he was close to the scene of a car bomb explosion. He rescued a boy that he estimates was about 3 years old from a burning minivan. As he carried the young boy in his arms to safety, a second car bomb exploded that ripped off his left arm and decapitated the boy. Mr. Mohamed is now the manager of an NGO called Lanterns of Mercy that assists disabled Iraqis. Baghdad, Iraq, 2011
