Wahid Razak Hamid, 26 and married with 2 young children, was an American trained police officer for less than a year before he was wounded. In 2006, Mr. Hamid was assigned to protect a church in Baghdad’s Karada neighborhood when he responded to a nearby IED explosion. At the scene of the blast, a second device exploded and wounded him. After 2 months in a hospital, his leg was amputated due to gangrene. “When I first heard about the law I was very optimistic because I thought we would be first to get a raise as wounded policemen. Then I heard they will cut our salaries instead.” After a sigh he added, “It was a black hour when I joined the service.” Baghdad, Iraq, 2011
