Oleksandr Kartatsev, 24 lives in the basement of a school in Kharkiv's northern Saltivka neighborhood. He lives in the basement on weekdays so he can continue working in the city and joins his family in a safer village on weekends. Hundreds of residential and commercial buildings in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city located approximately 45km from the Russian border, have been damaged and destroyed by Russia in its ongoing war against Ukraine. Sizeable regions of Kharkiv, a city of approximately 1.5 million people before Russia's full-scale invasion, are largely empty as the many residents have fled the violence.
